Heritage has been absent from the mainstream sustainable development debate despite its crucial importance to societies. Heritage sites have to potential to contribute to social, economic and environmental goals. Therefore, World Heritage may provide a platform to develop and test new approaches that demonstrate the relevance of heritage for sustainable development. The African World Heritage Fund has a strong programme on Sustainable Development and Heritage, which you can read about in our progress reports below. The programmes focus on both entrepreneurship workshops as well as sustainable development workshops.
