About the African World Heritage Fund

The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) is an intergovernmental organization created in 2006 by the African Union and UNESCO to support the effective conservation and protection of cultural and natural heritage of Outstanding Universal Value in Africa. The main objective of the AWHF is to address the challenges faced by African States Parties in the implementation of the 1972 World Heritage Convention, specifically, the underrepresentation of African sites on the World Heritage List and the insufficient conservation and management of these sites. 

The Fund became a Category II Centre under the auspices of UNESCO in 2010 hence, an official partner of UNESCO. The Fund is hosted by the Government of the Republic of South Africa, at the Development Bank of Southern Africa, on behalf of the African continent.

About the Role: Programme Specialist

As Programme Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering the Fund’s core programmes. Reporting to the Head of Programmes, you will be responsible for the design, development, and implementation of initiatives that support African countries in their heritage conservation efforts.

This includes:

  • Supporting the coordination at regional and national capacity-building workshops
  • Supporting the nomination of African sites to the World Heritage List
  • Monitoring and evaluating heritage conservation and sustainability projects
  • Engaging with stakeholders across government, civil society, and international organizations
  • Promoting awareness and advocacy for African heritage
