A Night to Remember: Celebrating Two Decades of Sustainable Investment in Africa's Heritage
On 7 August 2026, the African World Heritage Fund marked a historic milestone with a prestigious Fundraising Gala Dinner held as part of its flagship 20th Anniversary Celebrations. Hosted at the iconic Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site at Avianto Hotel in Gauteng, South Africa, the evening brought together distinguished leaders, heritage professionals, diplomats, development partners, philanthropists, tourism stakeholders, and private sector representatives to celebrate a shared commitment to safeguarding Africa’s cultural and natural heritage.
Held under the theme: “Two Decades of Sustainable Investment in Africa’s Heritage,” the Gala Dinner reflected on twenty years of achievement, partnership, and impact. Since its establishment in 2006 by the African Union and UNESCO, the African World Heritage Fund has played a leading role in strengthening heritage conservation across the continent, supporting World Heritage nominations, building professional capacity, advancing research and advocacy, and empowering communities connected to Africa’s heritage sites. Over the past two decades, the Fund has mobilised and invested more than USD 20 million in heritage conservation and capacity building initiatives throughout Africa.
The Gala Dinner formed part of the 20th Anniversary celebrations, on the sidelines of the Fund’s 39th Board of Governors Meeting, and served as both a commemoration of past achievements and a call to action for the future. Throughout the evening, guests reflected on the importance of sustainable investment, strategic partnerships, and collective responsibility in ensuring that Africa’s heritage continues to contribute meaningfully to socio economic development.
The programme featured inspiring remarks from leaders and partners who have supported the Fund’s journey, alongside cultural performances and entertainment that celebrated the depth and richness of Africa’s heritage. Highlights a keynote address delivered by Dr. Naledi Pandor, and a Heritage Auction that underscored the importance of investing in the future of Africa’s heritage.
One of the most memorable moments of the evening was the recognition of individuals whose dedication, leadership, and service have helped shape the success and growth of the Fund over the past two decades. The occasion honoured Mr. Themba Wakashe with the AWHF Heritage Award for his visionary leadership as a founding member and former Chairperson of the Board of Governors; H.E. Mr. Tebogo Seokolo with the AWHF Distinguished Service Award for advancing the Fund’s partnerships and fundraising agenda; and Ms. Relebohile Malahleha and Mr. Rapulane Mogototoane with AWHF Board Service Awards in recognition of their outstanding governance contributions
The evening also celebrated Mr. Thebe Ikalafeng, recipient of the AWHF Heritage Champion Award, whose longstanding advocacy for Africa’s identity, culture, and heritage has elevated African narratives on the global stage and inspired a renewed appreciation for heritage as a driver of pride, opportunity, and sustainable development.
Beyond the celebrations, the Gala Dinner reinforced a powerful message: safeguarding Africa’s heritage requires sustained commitment, investment, and collaboration. Through partnership pledges, stakeholder engagement, and fundraising initiatives aimed at strengthening the AWHF Endowment Fund, the event highlighted the critical role that governments, institutions, businesses, philanthropists, and communities all play in protecting the continent’s heritage legacy for generations to come.
For those fortunate enough to attend, the evening was more than a milestone celebration. It was a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when people come together around a shared vision for Africa’s future. The atmosphere was one of reflection, pride, inspiration, and optimism, fitting for an institution that has spent two decades championing the protection and promotion of Africa’s World Heritage.
