World Heritage Sites in Africa
Africa has a long and rich history, which is evident in the numerous natural and cultural heritage sites throughout the continent. It is home to the cradle of mankind and boasts a magnificent range of fauna and flora as well as cultural treasures from ancient and modern times.
The magnificent sites of Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Timbuktu (Mali), Victoria Falls (Zambia and Zimbabwe), Lake Malawi (Malawi), Virunga National Park (Democratic Republic of Congo), Cradle of Mankind (South Africa) and Rock Hewen Churches of Lalibela (Ethiopia) are already inscribed on the World Heritage List. Despite being home to a vast number of sites, the African continent remains underrepresented on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
